North Fall Qualifier – September 26-27th, 2015:
The Cornell Sailing Team hosted the North 1 Qualifier this past weekend. This regatta would qualify the top four boats for War in October.
Saturday proved to be extremely light conditions of patchy northerly wind, with the starts postponed until after lunch.
The A-fleet with Will Jones and Simone Larose began the day with a solid three first races putting Queen’s in fifth overall. After another delay, the B-fleet with Matt Sherar and Katie Combaluzier was sent out to complete their three races just as the sun was coming down. Starting their set with a second, they ended the first day fifth with a few solid races.
Sunday proved to be a little windier with wind from the south. It became clear that staying in pressure was super important. Both Fleet A and B found the conditions difficult, and decision-making very intense. Midway through the day Fleet A was swapped out for Sam Thompson and Daniel Sheedy. The racing was difficult and we ended Day 2 tied for 7th. We had a great time in Ithaca, and loved exploring Cornell. This weekend has left us eager to improve our starts and racing tactics.
