Two Queen’s Sailors Qualify at Laser North

2nd and 3rd on the podium

LASER NORTH Saturday, September 12 2015:

The regatta began later than expected, due to a lack of wind and storms on the radar, but after waiting, sailors headed out in a steady breeze, building to 12-14 knots. The first race kicked off at approximately 12:15. After 10 short, yet exhausting 20 minute races were completed, sailors were sent in at 5:30. Henry Machum held first place in points the whole day, just dropping to 3rd after the last race, Luke Ruitenberg finished the day sitting in 5th, and Will Jones 10th.

Sunday, September 13: After waiting until 1:00pm for the wind to fill and the first race to be started, wind switches again hindered the start of the 11th race of the regatta. Finally, with an unusual and light wind blowing on the sound, races began. With only a few points separating the top 5 boats, competition was tight and every point counted. Will Jones and Henry Machum took 1st and 2nd respectively, making a very strong start to day 2. Luke Ruitenberg followed with a 1st and 2nd in races 12 and 13. Queen’s made a jump in the results as many sailors fought with consistency in the lighter and shiftier conditions. After a total of 4 races were completed, totaling 14 for the regatta, Luke Ruitenberg made a jump up to 2nd, Henry Machum held 3rd, qualifying both for Carl van Duyne and Will Jones made a comeback up to 7th, just missing the cutoff of top 6 by one place.

All in all, a successful weekend in Kings Point for Queens Laser sailors!
