This past weekend, September 22-23, the Queen’s Sailing Team competed at the Princeton Women’s Open at the Raritan Yacht Club in New Jersey. Kate Thomas, Hilary Grantmyre, Heather Richardson and Joy MacDonald represented Queen’s. The sailing conditions were tough, it was very shifty and the wind speeds were up and down throughout the day, ranging between 5-12 knots. The team had some very good races, with many second and third place finishes. After 12 races for both the A and B fleet, the Queen’s women finished third overall.
The Queen’s Sailing Team also headed down to North #1 this weekend, hosted by Fordham and Columbia at the Morris Yacht and Beach Club in the Bronx. Paul Throop, David Kagan, Graham Hutchings and Mac Morrin represented Queen’s, accompanied by coach Max St-Maurice, and finished 10th overall. Being a qualifying regatta for WAR, the MAISA fall championships, the competition was fierce and the racing challenging. Sixteen universities were represented. Congratulations to Paul Throop and David Kagan for getting a first place. Overall Queen’s made improvements over the weekend, adapted to the local conditions, and showed very consistent starts and down winds. There is another chance to qualify for WAR in North #2, in October.
This upcoming weekend, September 29-30, the Queen’s Sailing Team is hosting their annual Queen’s Open Regatta at KYC. There will be 8 schools represented and the competition will be tight. Come down to the club Saturday or Sunday to see Queen’s in action!
